FAQs Volume 2: Shipping

Oh shipping.  How I hate hate hate shipping.  Maybe you hate it too.  Maybe we should all move to one central location, like a compound.  That way we could just hand things to each other instead of sending things through the mail.  Well, until that's possible I suppose we just have to stick to shipping.

I don't know all there is to know about shipping things, but I have been shipping using the United States Postal Service (USPS) almost daily for a year and a half so I for sure have learned a thing or two.  It's my hope that this post will help you in your shipping endeavors as well.

Shipping Scale

If you want to ship from home like I do, the first thing you need to do is get yourself a shipping scale.  Let me just say shipping from home is way better.  You don't have to run to the post office every time you want to ship something, and you can just put whatever it is in your mailbox or schedule a pickup (more on that later) and never spend the money on gas or even get dressed.  Score.

They sell postal scales at Walmart and Staples and places like that, but unless you can find a good deal on one I say avoid those stores.  The scales are upwards of $30.00 and I got mine for way less.  This is the exact scale that I use.  (Click on the picture to go to Amazon).

This one is a Weighmax scale that can weigh things up to 35 pounds.  I can weigh Rylea and Dieter both on it if I want to.  I like it because it runs on batteries or you can plug it into the wall and use it that way.  I'm cheap, I don't want to spend extra money on batteries so I just plug it in.  I got this one for less than $20 and if you have Amazon Prime it'll ship free.  Bam.  Done.

Domestic Shipping Rates

Ok, now that you've got the scale taken care of, you need to know your options when it comes to shipping services.  The follow information applies to domestic shipping only.  International shipping is a whole different ball of wax.

  • First Class Shipping: Anything weighing under 13 ounces will ship USPS First Class Mail.  This class of mail usually ships within 3-5 business days.  Depending on where you are in the country it takes about 3 days on average.  This is the cheapest way to ship using the USPS and if you can stay under 13 ounces you won't get charged an arm and a leg to ship something.  For this reason, you want to keep your shipping containers as lightweight as you can so you're adding extra bulk.
  • Priority Shipping: Anything that weighs 13.1 ounces or more will need to be shipped priority mail.  Priority mail is usually shipped within 2-3 business days.  There are a few different options here.  The USPS has a product called Priority Mail Flat Rate Shipping.  This means you pay one flat rate no matter what your package weighs and they will ship it for that price. So you can ship a 10 pound bowling ball or a stack of feathers and if you're using the same kind of box then they'll both ship for the same price.  You can get flat rate shipping supplies for FREE on the USPS website here.  There are several options on package sizes for flat rate shipping.  It's best to weigh your package and then use this Postage Price Calculator to decide which shipping method is going to be the cheapest for you.  It might be cheaper to skip the flat rate boxes and just ship your package priority based on the weight.
Information taken from USPS.com
  • Express Shipping:  Express shipping is used when you're in a hurry.  This is overnight shipping and it's the most expensive option.  There are also flat rate options for Express mail, and you can still get Express shipping supplies for free as well.

Information taken from USPS.com
When using Priority or Express mailing options you can still avoid that trip to the post office.  Just sign on to USPS.com and schedule a pick up the night before.  You can write in there directions on where your mailman or mailwoman can find your package and they'll come and pick it all up for you.  You can also have them pick up your first class packages as long as at least one of your packages is going Priority or Express.  Most of the time, I can fit all my first class packages in the mailbox and lift the flag and I'm good to go.

First Class Shipping Supplies

If you have ever purchased anything from SPC then you know what my shipping supplies look like.  I use cello bags to wrap my clothing and then I put those inside a poly mailer.  I slap a postage sticker on the outside of the bag that I print from my computer and voila.  Ready to ship.

Here's a picture of some of my clothes all wrapped up in the clear cello bags.  I use those bags to keep the clothes extra clean and protected.  Say my mailer gets a hole in it and it rains, these bags protect the clothes from getting wet or even smelling like smoke if your mail carrier is a smoker.  In my opinion, well worth the money, and it helps step up your professional game.

I buy my cello bags online and I usually get about 200 at a time in size 9 x 12 or somewhere around there.  I check the prices between Ebay and Amazon and buy whatever has the best deal.  Usually, I get them from Amazon because I can get free shipping.

Here's a picture of a poly mailer.  I also get these on Ebay or Amazon depending on the price and I get a bunch all at once to keep me stocked up.  I buy them every couple of months depending on how busy I've been and how many orders I've filled.  I've never had a problem with these being ripped or torn when they're delivered to my customers (or at least no one has told me so).  They hold up well and if you're careful when you open them up, you can turn them inside out and use them to ship something else again.
I do all my invoicing and taking payments through PayPal, so it makes the most sense for me to ship through PayPal as well.  If you aren't shipping through a paid PayPal invoice you can still use paypal to ship using www.paypal.com/shipnow.  You can ship directly from the USPS website also, just depends on what works best for you.  I print my postage directly from PayPal onto self adhesive shipping labels (also from Ebay), like these.  It really cuts down the cost on what I've spent on computer paper and packing tape and they hold up well in the mail also.  You'll still need to buy black printer ink more frequently depending on how much you ship, but at least you're not buying all the other stuff too!

I think that sums up how I use the USPS to ship stuff in my business.  If you have any other questions or any suggestions on stuff I can add just leave it in the comments!  I'd be happy to help you out wherever I can!!

Pattern Review: Jaden T-Shorts Pattern

Well, I figure if I'm going to have another baby boy in a couple of months that I need to get better at sewing for boys.  And, since I've had this particular pattern for months and hadn't tried it out yet, I figure now is as good a time as any.   You can use the pattern and turn t shirts into a pair of shorts, or you can get some yardage like I did and make a pair from scratch.

I bought some of this fabric just a couple of days ago and it got here really quickly.  Can't beat the price!  This fabric is soooo soft.  Very very soft.  It's an awesome quality and I'd recommend it for sure.

Armed with my LilyGiggle shorts pattern, and my fabric, and my poster board pattern (see more about that here), I made little D man a pair of shorts in about 30 minutes start to finish.  I love these little shorts.  The fit is great, the length is great, and it was really easy to follow.  All LilyGiggle patterns I've used are such a high quality, well written, and are really just awesome in general.

Sugarplum Cuties: T-Shorts

I love that this pattern calls for a separate waistband because it allowed me to add some blue in there making these shorts much more appealing to my little blue-loving boy.  If there's blue in it, he's all for it.

I finished the hem of the shorts with a double stitch, which I think makes them look more finished.

Sugarplum Cuties: T-Shorts

My fabric part about this fabric is the inside.  It's a french terry so that means the reverse side is kinda like a soft bath towel.

Sugarplum Cuties: T-Shorts

If you're looking for an awesome pattern for boys (and these could totally be done in a girly way too), head on over to LilyGiggle and grab her Jaden T-Shorts Pattern.  It rocks.

P.S. This is not a paid post and I was never asked to review this pattern.  I just liked it and thought I would share.  :)

Susan "Baby Guns" DeWitt

I swear, naming this baby is never going to happen. Between the Mr being away and us not getting to talk very often it's so hard to sit down and discuss potential boy names. It bothers me that this baby doesn't have a name. The kids are calling him Susan. Seriously, Susan. Here's how it went down in Old Navy the other day:

Me: Hey guys, there's a baby sale.  Lets see if we can find something for your baby brother.
Rylea: You mean the one in your belly?
Me: Yep, the baby boy in my belly, he's going to need some clothes.
Dieter: Yeah, Susan.  Baby Susan needs clothes.
Rylea: Yeah mom, I think Susan would like that one.

I'll never understand my kids and their affinity for the name Susan.  Maybe it's because of this movie character

Source

Anyway, Mr. SPC has his own ideas on the baby's name.  Actually only one idea.  It's Gunner.  And, his entire argument for the name Gunner centers around the possible nicknames.  Let me just bullet point them here for you:

  • Guns
  • Gun
  • Baby Guns
  • Gunnie
  • Gunsie
  • Shotgun
I'm not even kidding.  You can't make this stuff up.  Can you tell he's a military man?  Can you tell he's been immersed in guns everyday for many hours for the past month?  It's infiltrating my whole life.  To be fair, I don't totally hate the name Gunner.  But I do hate the idea that my husband will be saying, "Oh shotgun, I love you," at some point.  No thanks.

My favorite name is Beckett.  A nice name that has nothing to do with guns.  I'm even willing to compromise with Beckett Gunner.  He tells me he's willing to compromise with Gunner Beckett.  My guess is that we're both going to lose our favorites and settle on something entirely different.  Or, maybe I'll lose entirely and the kids will win.  Oh dear, I certainly hope this boy doesn't end up Susan "Baby Guns" DeWitt.

Sunday Scripture Printable 3

Today's printable is Philippians 4:13.  I've reminded myself of this verse over and over in my life in many different situations.  That saying I hear often that "God never gives you more than you can handle," is simply not true.  I know that Jesus allows things in my life that are far too much for me to handle.  And, I also know that He does this because He does not want me to handle it all.  He wants me to drop to my knees and pray and hand the situation over Him to handle while I trust in His provision, His plan, and His love.  That's how He draws us nearer to Him, and that's how we can enter in and cultivate a relationship with Him.  If you don't know Phil 4:13 yet, commit to memory this week and always remember that when you're faced with something that's just too much, too overwhelming, and too hard; you've got Jesus on your side and He'll help you through it all every single time.

You Are Loved.

I received a message from a customer today and it just melted my heart.  She said:
"got our custom butterfly dress in the mail today. OMG its so gorgeous. Cant wait to get it on my daughter. Thank you for taking my order. Our first Sugarplum Cutie and definitely not our last."
It's messages like that which really make me smile and remind me why I'm in business.  You women who have bought from me (whether it was one time or over and over) have helped me to provide my family with a little extra income, and allowed me to stay home and raise my children myself as my husband and I feel like I've been called to do.

You see, 2012 was a challenging year for my husband and me.  It was especially hard at the end of it.  We lost a baby in September which was devastating and confusing and hard and just really an emotional time for us.  I know we're not the only people to have experienced a loss like this, and I know, sadly, we will not be the last.  Praise the Lord that He was there for us to help us through and be our strength through that time.  We serve an amazing God who will use seemingly "bad" situations for His glory, and I was certainly drawn nearer to Him through it all.  I kept feeling like the Lord was trying to tell me something through all of this and so I prayed about it, and I finally felt like I was able to figure it out.  He wanted me to know I wasn't alone even though we were miles and miles from friends and family, He wanted me to know that He was never going to let me down and He'd be the one thing that was constant, always.  But, above all, He wanted me to know, "You are loved."

Sugarplum Cuties: You are Loved

Then, in October, my husband was blind sided with a job loss due to the economy with no warning whatsoever.  We were then forced to make plans to pack up and move our entire house and family within a week.  We had zero funds for a moving truck, moving boxes, and all the other expenses that come with a cross country move and it was the women that have been such amazing Sugarplum supporters that banded together, held a charity auction for us, and gifted us over $800 to get us where we needed to go.  Our needs were also met by various family members sending money or even driving cross country to help us with just a day or 2 notice.  God used each and every one of those people, whom I've never actually met, to meet our needs and show us just how loved we are.  Everyday a new need was met and most of the time, before my husband and I were actually aware that we were going to have a need.  It was absolutely amazing.  We held so tight to the Lord's promise of provision in our lives and man did He come through in a BIG BIG way.  once again, I was reminded:

Then, a few days after the job loss, we found out we were pregnant again which was a huge blessing for us and just really filled us with joy because we fully believe what the Bible says about children.  Psalm 127:3 says "Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him."  We knew that we were going to be met with some people (even family members) that would question us and our attitudes and why we were so happy to be pregnant without a steady income.  But, what we knew that they didn't was that no matter the circumstance, the situation, or how things may look on the outside; children come straight from God Himself to us.  They are our present, our gift, and we will always rejoice over a pregnancy and a new life from Him.  I was once again reminded,

I also feel led to tell you the same thing.  YOU ARE LOVED!  You may feel overwhelmed or lost. Maybe you feel like you are failing miserably as a mom or as a wife, maybe you feel like there's no hope for you.  Those are all lies we tell ourselves, we get lost in them and start drowning in them.  It's time we picked ourselves up and held tight, so tight, to the fact that God loves us.  He loves us with a love that cannot be measured. He loves us more than we love our children, more than we love our husbands, and more than we could love anything else in this world.  He loves us so much that he killed his own son for us.  As I have experienced the loss of a child, I cannot imagine willingly sending my own son to be beaten, tortured, and killed in the worst way, for the benefit of any one person, let alone the whole world.  He loves you and He wants to pull you through whatever you're going through right now, give it up to Him ladies.  Lay it all at His feet.  He'll carry it all for you so you don't have to.  You can't do it alone, you weren't meant to.  He wants to help, let Him.  YOU ARE LOVED.

Behind the Scenes: Pattern Storage

So, I mentioned in this post that I use poster board a lot in sewing.  If I draft a new pattern of my own or buy a new PDF pattern online and print it out, I always trace the final version with my alterations and adjustments onto a piece of poster board like this:

Sugarplum Cuties: Pattern Storage

Then, I write on the new poster board pattern the size, what the pattern is for, and what piece it is and cut it out like this:

Sugarplum Cuties: Pattern Storage

Then I punch a hole in the pattern somewhere, usually somewhere it won't rip easily.

Sugarplum Cuties: Pattern Storage

And then I find the hook with all the patterns in that size and stick this new one right on it.  That way, I can easily find whatever pattern I'm looking for and my patterns last a long time and don't wear or tear.  This has been a super great organization tool for me in my business.  You can get the little silver hook and poster board at any Staples, Office Max, etc. and it's all pretty cheap.

Sugarplum Cuties: Pattern Storage

Here's what the wall above my cutting table looks like right now.  Disclaimer: I'm in the middle of cutting a new dress for Rylea and testing out a new pattern on her, so it's a mess!  Whatever, this is life.

Sugarplum Cuties: Pattern Storage

So that's my cutting table.  The row of patterns at the top are all hanging on 3M hooks that are stuck to the wall.  The black shelf to the right of the table is full of kid toys.  On the table you see my printer (for printing postage, patterns, packing slips, ect.) and my iron which recently I've been using for appliques in the Bfly Dresses.  My cutting mat is that green thing underneath everything else.  I've also got my rotary cutter, my blue paper scissors, my purple fabric scissors, a yardstick and a ruler, a hot glue gun (I was using that to fix Dieter's Buzz guy that broke), a pink shirt that's going to be Rylea's new dress when I'm done with this post, some packing tape, my Kindle (why?  I have no idea), and some candy.

I hope this little behind the scenes look at my cutting space doesn't scare you away and it helps show you a little bit about how I keep my patterns neat and tidy and together even if my table isn't currently in a better state.  :)  Happy sewing!

It's All About Me

Ok, seriously, when you're a mom it can never be all about you.  It's just impossible.  I don't know about you guys, but my kids follow me every.single.minute.  I'm never alone.  Not alone in the shower or the bathroom even.  Especially not the bathroom.  What is it?  It's like I have an audience every time I go potty.  Sometimes I even get a round of applause and a "good job mommy" from my little man who is so encouraging when it comes to potty time.

Source

But, I do have a Pinterest board with all the sewing projects I'd love to complete for myself if I ever get some random free time or a solo vacation or something.  So, in essence, these things will most likely never happen.  Haha.  I'm so thankful I'm so wrapped up in my family that I don't have time for myself though, really.  I just love my husband and my kids so much and I love having them in my life every single day.  (I also love that I have people to talk to when I'm sitting on the potty).  So, I thought I'd share some of those "someday" projects with you and maybe I'll hold myself accountable for doing something for me sometime.

Travel Duffle Pattern
I absolutely love the look of this duffle bag.  They remind me of Vera Bradley a little bit and I would love to make myself one so I could travel in style.

at second street maxi dress tutorial
This maxi dress is awesome.  I love that it's not a halter or a tube top and it's totally cute and modest.  I also love that I could make one to fit my little pregnant bump and I could probably wear it throughout my pregnancy by just making it a few inches longer.  Her tutorial is awesome and easy to follow too!

Linda Eve: Tutorial - necktie bracelet

These bracelets are genius.  They're so unique and cute and girly, and made out of a man's tie.  I could see hitting up Goodwill or any other thrift store for some ties to make these.  Seems like a quick enough and easy project, you could probably even make some for friends as gifts.  Awesome.

Little Birdie Secrets: Kindle/Nook case tutorial
I have a Kindle Touch.  I love to read.  I'm a horrible sleeper and sometimes the only thing that will help me fall asleep is reading a good book at night.  I read a lot.  I don't have a case for my Kindle, but I need one and this tutorial is great.  I love that she uses a zipper to keep it closed because if I'm honest with you, I've got a million ridiculous things in my purse (serioulsy ridiculous, but that's another post entirely) that could scratch up my Kindle and damage it.  Super cute!

Sweet Verbana: "It's a Cinch" Bag tutorial
Ok, I've read this tutorial on her blog like at least 10 times.  I love love love love this bag so much. It's so BIG.  I have to have a big bag.  Bigger is better when it comes to purses for me.  I really want this bag, and I've had it pinned forever.  By the way, her blog totally rocks, stick around there for a while and read some of her other posts.  So talented!

What are some things you'd love to do for yourself if you had the time/energy/patience?

Valentine's Day Recap and a Belly Pic

Did you have a great Valentine's Day yesterday?  We sure did!  I missed my precious husband of course, but he still made us all feel so loved from afar, and we filled our day with fun stuff too.

First, the kids got up in the morning and found their goodies from mommy and daddy, some new shoes, some candy, a Wonder Woman and a Buzz Lightyear juice bottle, and new crown and princess jewelry and a helium balloon.

Then, we went to the kitchen to eat some breakfast and we found even more surprises from Mamaw and Papaw (one of the perks of living with your grandparents)!  A new Lalaloopsy purse, a monster truck, some more candy, a Valentine's card, some new Scooby cereal, and some fruit snacks.

Then we spent our day playing with our new goodies and eating far too much candy until we heard a knock at the door with a giant flower bouquet for mommy!

I can't wait until these 18 little pink and white rose buds bloom.  They already smell awesome and Rylea was beside herself with excitement thinking about how her daddy sent some roses to her mommy, she was so impressed.

Then a little later, there was another knock at the door. It was that little tower next to the flowers in the first picture.  A little tower of all things chocolate.  Does my husband know me perfectly or what?  All varieties of dark chocolates: covered pretzels, covered graham crackers, truffles, and even some chocolate chip cookies.  The PERFECT gift for a pregnant me on Valentine's Day when the hubs and I couldn't be together.  He just loves me so well, I'm so grateful for the man God created just for me!

A little later in the day when it was time for dinner, Cali and her little babies came over to visit us and we exchanged some more Valentine goodies and had a movie night.  Here's all the kiddos all camped out on the floor with some popcorn watching Peter Pan:

Super cute little lounging cousins!  Ayden in his awesome John Deere hat, Rylea next to him, Jaelynn lounging with Simba, and Dieter rocking his Batman jammies.

Oh and Valentine's day marked week 19 of pregnancy for me, and since the hubs asked to see some belly pictures so he can be a part of the progress still, here's a little bump action to tide everyone over.  Oh, and my new camera in there too.

I hope you all were as blessed by Valentine's Day as we were near and afar.  Lets not forget the reason we all love each other, "We love because he first loved us." -1 John 4:19

Busy Busy Busy!

This week has been a busy one.  Without the hubs here lending a helping hand so often, it hasn't been easy keeping up with the kids and with the business.  But, I did manage to get a few orders out including some spring sets that you can find here.  Here's what I've been up to:

I finished this Batgirl dress, and I had to make sure I worked on it all during Rylea's sleeping times. She has a major affinity for all things Batgirl and I knew I wouldn't hear the end of it if she saw me making such a cute dress for someone else.

I did this Yo Gabba Gabba! tunic for the same sweet little girl that's getting Batgirl.  This one was super fun and I'm seriously in love with that rainbow chevron fabric.  I hate that my fabric source is sold out at the moment.

This little dress is for a tiny girly.  Like 18-24 months sized.  It was so fun to make a teeny dress again, I love doing those!

This dress was a bit tricky because the shirt was a little long for the length of the dress.  Sadly, Pluto had to get the chop, but he made it back in the dress on the skirt down there in the form of an applique.  So, everything worked out in the end.

I hope you've all had a productive week so far as well.  Don't forget, Valentine's Day is TOMORROW!  If you're in a pinch, you can use my free printables here if you need some last minute Valentines :)

Sunday Scripture Printable 1

I decided to start a series on here every Sunday.  I'll offer a free printable scripture verse for you to print out and frame or do whatever you want with it!  Pretty soon we'll have enough verses to cover a whole wall I hope.  So here's the first one.  1John 4:19 is one of Rylea's memory verses and I think it's an especially good one as Valentine's Day approaches.  I pray my children always know that Jesus loves them far more than I ever could, and He will never let them down no matter what.

Homeschool Activity Book

We're not actual homeschoolers.  We haven't registered with the state or anything like that, and I don't follow one specific curriculum  but I do try to be as purposeful with our days at home as possible.  One thing that has been awesome for us and fun for Rylea is the activity book I've made for her over the past year.

I got a regular 3-ring binder and filled it with sheet protectors like these:
And then I got her some small dry erase markers like these:

Then I printed out a bunch of worksheets, letter tracing, coloring sheets, pattern worksheets, etc. from various sites around the internet and put those into the page protectors.  Now, Rylea can write and color on those with her markers and erase them and do it over and over again.  She has great control with her markers now and recognizes most letters.  I try and sit with her daily to do some writing and letter practice, but, some days it just doesn't happen at all and some days I let her get her book out on her own and do what she wants from it.
Sugarplum Cuties: Homeschool Activity Book
The worksheet above is from Worksheet Works.  You can type in any word or letter or number or whatever you want and then it will creat a PDF worksheet for you to print out and let your kiddo practice on.  It's really awesome.  You can also choose print or cursive and there are a bunch of other options too.

Sugarplum Cuties: Homeschool Activity Book

This worksheet with the apples is from our A week.  (Don't mind the crazy hair, she slept with braids in and wouldn't let me take them out.)  It's part of an entire curriculum you can get from Confessions of a Homeschooler called Letter of the Week.  I highly recommend it if you have a preschooler.  When you buy the program you get everything in PDF format ready to print out.  She even sends lesson plans for the entire alphabet that corresponds to all of her worksheets.  So awesome!

I also have a Homeschool Pinterest board that you can follow here to see other awesome websites and sources I've used  before.  Happy homeschooling!

Mama Got a New Camera

I finally did it.  After complaining all the time that my pictures stink and that they're grainy and they're not the quality I wanted, I just bit the bullet and bought a new (to me) camera.  It's a used one I got on Amazon.  The seller had 100% feedback and a return policy so I figured it was a low risk situation and I got it for more than $100 less than what I would have paid new.  It came quickly (within about 3 days), and was packed in the original packing with everything included.

I got a Nikon Coolpix L120.  My sister-in-law has the same camera, and I used it to take pics of my new spring collection.  You can see those pictures here.  It's so much better than the old $40 point and shoot I've been using, and I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of it between business and taking pictures of the kiddos.

I haven't read the manual yet, or figured out all the features, but I've already used it a couple of times and it's great!  If you're looking for a more sophisticated point and shoot (because you don't want to mortgage your house for a DSLR), then I'd really recommend this one.  Here's to better Sugarplum pictures!

Google Searches

If you know me personally you know I Google absolutely everything.  I have a question, Google.  I have a symptom, Google.  My kids are bleeding profusely, Google.  I feel like if you could go back and look at all my Google searches you could accurately describe the timeline of my life.  That's probably why investigators are always searching criminals's computers, so they can see what they've been up to via Google.

  • When is constipation dangerous? (Isn't that lovely, just another awesome side effect of pregnancy).
  • Nose spray addiction - There was a husband and wife debate that needed solving
  • Flounce skirt tutorial
  • Proverbs 15:1
  • Blogger HTML - that one is a doozy, I was not cut out for computer code
  • IRS Form 4852
  • Eskimo - Rylea wanted to know what an Eskimo was so I googled some pictures for her to see
  • How to add a paypal button to blogger

I honestly don't know what I would do without Google capabilities.  I might have to have a comprehensive set of encyclopedias at home to consult daily.  I taught myself how to sew and crochet (basic stuff) using Google, among a million other things.

What have you Googled lately??
